Dads rock!
Happy Father's Day to all the dads in the world.

My dad has given me lots of advice over the years. "Take the shot" was one of my favorites, that and "You don't want to look back and say, shoulda, woulda, coulda."
.
How about you? What advice has your dad given you that turned out to be the good stuff?

"Never lend money to friends. If you have the money to give then give it freely with no strings attached; if you don't, then don't give it."

My Dad passed on 13 years ago, but this still remains one of the best and most useful pieces of advice I have ever been given.

Here's to my Dad, and to all the other Dads around!

"You can be anything you want to be."

I did become what I really wanted to be: a writer. Not self-supporting, but that wasn't in the catalog under "writer."

My Dad died when I was 16- he was my hero and my friend- and he thought I was the most wonderful girl in the world. The best advice he ever gave me was, "Listen to your mother" - He was totally in love with my mother. I loved the way he loved us.

I once asked my Dad what he'd like as his epitaph, and he said he'd like it to be "He had fun and he helped people". It occurred to me somewhat later that Bill and Ted said basically the same thing "Party on, dudes!" and "Be excellent to each other!".

I think the classics wear really well.

Hugs,

Julie

My dad told me to become a plumber.
I am a teacher. Then again, I did put myself through school working as a handyman and I still do most of my house fixing myself...

We always hear "One day at a time" and it makes the difference in so many events and situations. You can't do much more than just take it one day at a time. Don't look too far ahead, don't look back...

Something he got from his father:
"let the machines do the work"

When I remember this, things go much smoother.

"When a wave looks too big, just go under it."

This is a pearl of surfing wisdom that is useful throughout life. You don't have to struggle against things that are too big for you. A lot of the things in life that seem over-whelming will just wash over you if you just relax. This lesson, combined with, "If you get rolled, just relax until it passes over you." make taking risks much less scary. You can't control the forces around you, but you can control how you respond to them.
