The Stars at Night are Big and Bright....

Why am I running around like a Muppet that's been swimming in a vat of Jolt Cola? Because I'm flying to Texas tomorrow to speak at the Society of Children's Book Writer's and Illustrators group in Arlington.

I"m excited... and just a bit nervous. Not about speaking, I can do that for DAYS! But I've only flown once since 9/11 and all I remember was a congo line of pretty much stripping down to your underoos.
.
Hey! you travelers out there, what are some tips for surviving airports in the modern age? I know I can't take food on the plane, or can I? Can I pack protein bars in my suitcase? I'm only going to be gone one night but I feel like I'm going to the Himalayas. We are such Hobbits. (And not the adventuresome ones like Merry and Pippin but more like Sam who overpacked.)
.
.
Wish me luck! And if you are anywhere near the Fort Worth Dallas area and have nothing to do on Saturday stop by!

The most important thing is to have all your fluid toiletries and cospemtics fit comfortably into a quart size ziplock bag, and have it outside of your case to set on top of your carryon as you go through security. No individual fluid can be greater than 3 oz. So, food is okay, but you'll have to discard your water bottle at security and buy the overpriced waiting area water once you get through.

Hey, don't you have family in Texas?

Can you just put your shampoo etc in your suitcase and ship it through?

I have cousins in Texas but it is a pretty big place. My sister used to live in that area but now they are in Big Bear.

I know nothing about checked baggage. I never check mine. I always travel light and keep everything with me as a carry-on unless overhead fills and they ask me to check the bag. I hate waiting around at luggage claim. Once the plane is down, I want to go, go, go!

You can send larger amounts of liquids in your baggage checked luggage (I know because Neil Gaiman wrote about traveling with his teenage daughter: http://journal.neilgaiman.com/search/label/father%27s%20day). Blogs are educational!

Additionally, if you travel with a laptop or other electronic devices (cell phone, blackberry, portable DVD player etc.) they must be outside of their case, along with any accessories to them (mouse, power cord, etc.) and not in the same little bucket as their case and sent through the x-ray (I tried stacking my laptop on the case and they got snippy).

Wear slip-on shoes, or have them all untied and ready to slip off when you get to security. My favorite snacks to bring are carrot sticks and apple slices. It is so nice to have crisp, tart things to eat. It helps combat the icky, salty, close-air feel of the airplane.

Speaking? Awesomeness! Go Marilyn!

In addition to the great suggestions above, if you have any sample products from stores, like shampoos and moisturizers that come in those teeny packets, those help *lots* in saving space when it comes to the 3 oz. rules (that's if you decide to do just carry-on and not check-in). Food is fine (recommended! Transit time take ages and you're starving!), and you can bring an empty sports water container to fill up in the airport so that you don't have to buy overpriced water bottles there.

Haven't traveled lately. Sounds like bureaucracy has taken over airport security and not in a good way. (We flew on the one-year anniversary of 9/11 and did not have to put up with half of what's being described.)

Have fun at your speaking engagement. Lucky audience.

Safe travels! I enjoyed reading the other tips as I'm packing a daughter to travel next week and was curious on the liquids. It's nice to get first hand info (and tips!) rather than the lists published.

I was reading the info on the Southwest Airlines website regarding their meal policy...had to laugh... paraphrasing... "...if you are traveling under 601 miles you will be fed peanuts. If you are traveling 602-1501 miles you will be fed peanuts and juice..." you get the jist of it! LOL It just read funny to me! ....you will be fed peanuts....

go as light as possible . drip dry clothes that dont show wrinkles. go for the sample or hotel stuff as far ad toiletries go. especially toothpaste in the little size.get to the airport early enough at least an hour before your flight because the lines are long at security. I have a pacemaker, so I have to get frisked each time I go through security. That always slows me down some. you are JUST GOING FOR ONE DAY, keep it simple.

Wish I was there to hear you. Hope you had a wonderful time. Last time I flew, I was flying home and my husband was driving the kids & luggage home the next day. It was fabulous, all I had was a book & my purse. I felt so glamorous!
My husband flies a lot, and he never checks his luggage. He uses a trifold garment bag from Victorinox that fits under his seat, and has a ziploc bag with sample size toiletries in his briefcase.
