Alice is in Wonderland.

Oh my gosh! Tim Burton is doing "Alice in Wonderland." Fan girl melting here. Johnny Depp is the Mad Hatter.
.
Have you seen the pictures?

Must go lie down now. Whilst I am reclining on my fainting couch, what's your take on Alice? Dodgson? Whimsical children's book or full scary?

Marilyn.

Alice: I've had nothing yet, so I can't take more.
The Hatter: You mean you can't take less; it's very easy to take more than nothing.

I'm de-lurking to share your virtual fainting couch at least.

'Alice' was the first 'big' book I ever read myself [much to my mother's disgust but that's another story]. I have adored it and Dodgson ever since but have to say "Mr. Burton, you have been watching too much Disney. Alice was a brunette!"

I've seen varying hair colors in books all published pre-Disney Alice, but I forget, does the text describe her hair color at all?

--

I love Tim Burton, Johnny Depp and Helen and Bonham Carter, but I'm most interested to see how the girl who plays Alice turns out. I really like the decision to keep her very normal looking, from the pictures and I think it will be interesting to see how she plays off the really out-there.

Off the top of my head, I'm not sure if it is in the text but a number of Dodgson's own illustrations of 'Alice' show a darker hair colour and Alice Liddell herself was indeed brunette [as can be clearly seen in her photographs]

hello!

Alice Liddell was a very adorable brunette but the Alice in Dodgson's hand drawn version looks blond to me. Tenniel's Alice was very blond. I personally prefer the Rackham Alice to Tenniel's.

Alice was my first trip into that world of magical mysticism too -- but my recollection of Tenniel's illustrations were that Alice was blonde, which made her more magical to my dark-haired self.

Alice definitely looks too grown up to me. Her chin is too strong for a little girl, and in photos I've seen on a different site she's giving a really adult glace over her shoulder with dirty permed hair!

Don't get me wrong. I LOVE Burton, and Depp, and Helena but Jeez what is it with Hollywood that even little girls have these big pointy chins? She looks about 25 and it's inappropriate.

Sorry but I've been wanting to say that all day.

But as for everything else -- SQUEEE!!!

Some one closer in age may have been a better choice but it does say - "In the new script, 17-year-old Alice is returning to Wonderland ten years after her first trip down the rabbit hole. Only, she doesn't remember it." Thus, this Alice is no longer a 'little' girl.

She doesn't remember her first trip? What are they doing, Tinman-ing Alice? Tinman is basically the Wizard of Oz, but Dorothy is an adult now and has no memories of Oz.
As to Alice in WOnderland, and Through the looking Glass, I never much cared for them. They were too much like a bad acid trip for me. I have never cared for characters that make no sense. I remember asking my mother, "Why?" alot. Such as "Why is the Queen so mean? Why is the Mad Hatter making no sense?" Why are they so abusive to the dormouse?"
That's another reason I think I didn't like the story, there really is a great deal of abuse in it.

It is a pretty creepy book. The word play is wonderful, though.

Context! Consider when "Alice" was written! I think it's a fabulous story and I think this looks very surreal and exciting; I'll reserve judgement until I've seen it. The Mad Hatter? Well, as one versed in the history of the Fur Trade, I can tell you that the combination of chemicals (turpentine and MERCURY) used in the formation of the fashionable beaver hats caused mercury poisoning and brain tissue deterioraton. Many hatters WERE "mad". Depp? Ooooh yeah. I'll be waiting for that one, right enough! Move over, Toymaker, there's room on that fainting couch for one more!

Schooching over,,,, There was a little macabre bit in the photo that I didn't put in, the Hatter's knuckles were all scraped up and there was a big bandage on one thumb. Depp looks pretty insane in the photo.

Fans self, reaches for smelling salts.

They were too much like a bad acid trip for me.

Funny that you should say that. As a first aid tip I was once told that if you had someone suffering a 'bad trip' from drug usage, a good thing to do is to put them in front of a television and play Disney's 'Alice in Wonderland'. Fortunately, I have never had the need to test this but person telling me was most emphatic of it's validity.

I had seen some of the pix. Thanks for the link to the rest. It should be something to see (visual design, costuming, makeup, etc.) no matter how the update/adaptation plays out.

I've just been informed that [apparently] the girl playing Alice is a local [for me]. A Canberran [from Canberra, Australia, that is].

Hi
Just found your site following a link from Jill Badonsky - so beautiful, and so much fun to be had - I feel very greedy downloading, but will share like a good girl should (I'm a school Librarian, so have lots of yung folk to share with!)
Am also EXCITED at the thought of the new Alice - good preview on Empire site - another fangirl here!
Bright wishes and blessings
