In Which I Attempt a Book Review....
One of the best things about being on vacation is getting to read. A good book is indispensable in airports and a one of my favorite luxuries. First I read this...
.

.
Perhaps you have heard of it? It's about a clutzy, whiney teenage girl that hates everything in her life until she meets the yummiest, prettiest, shiniest, sparkly superhero vampire who wants nothing more than to know everything about her (like her favorite color), watch her sleep (cree-peeee) and to drive really fast in really expensive Volvos. Once you get past the fact that Bella is a total helpless victim through the whole book and is continually saved by the growling but chaste Edward, it's a fast read and a guilty pleasure. I'm embarrassed that enjoyed reading it even though I annoyed my poor husband every five minutes with snort laughing and "Can you believe this?". It was like eating a bowl of sugar babies.
.

.
.
Then I read this book by Tamora Pierce...
.

.
Alanna is about a teenage girl who disguises herself as a boy so she can train to be a knight. When a bigger boy is bullying her and beating her up she trains really hard so she can kick his butt. Which made me really happy.
.
Guess which sequel I will read next? :-)
.

.
A disclaimer here, Tamora Pierce is a friend of mine. We met at a conference where we both speaking and I asked her what she wrote about, she said, "I write stories about girls that kick ass." She is one of the wittiest, coolest people in the world. I've never met Stephenie Meyer. If I did, I'd ask her how she managed to have three kids and write a bestselling novel by the time she was thirty.
.
What's on your nightstand?
.
Marilyn.
.
"...those of us who read because we love it more than anything, who feel about bookstores the way some people feel about jewelers..."

I just started reading The Girl with the Pearl Earring last night; it's pretty good. And I thoroughly enjoyed the Twilight series as well. Although I am still confused by the people raving and ranting about it; it didn't move me *that* much... You can check out everything else I've been reading here: http://www.goodreads.com/user/show/746729 I am a voracious reader! ^-^

I love Tamora Pierce's universe. Alanna is just one of her characters I adore. She has so many other great stories, so if you get a chance read them!
As to Twilight, I found the book one that you can't put down while reading, but afterwards I was like "Why?" I disliked all the characters, would have smacked Bella silly if I were to have met her for real and hated the whole bit about shiney vampires. I read a very interesting commentary about Twilight and how it is an allegory for Mormanism. According to the writer, the reason Bella was so helpless, is because Morman women aren't supposed to be able to think for themslves. Edward was so wonderful and chaste because Morman men are supposed to be the examples of how to live a good life. I have no idea if the writer is right or wrong, but it was interesting.

What?? There is no Mormanism in this book, silly!! Bella clearly thinks for herself!! Throughout the movie and the book she is so independent and free thinking it scares everyone! Read the book for real this time!

Trying to complete "Once and Future King" which is a different book than I remember it from my youth. But some how "Bordertown" jumped into my hand to be read. I was going to just read the Mockery short story, but then I saw Danceland and had to reread that as well.

Just went to our poor, old, understocked Borders to look for the next "Song of the Lioness" book. They had the third one, which I bought, but not the second. Now I have to search around. Feh.

I have to plead absent on TWILIGHT. You know how there are these little tiny things that make you daffy and don't bother anyone else? I bailed out on Laurell K. Hamilton on the 5th book because if she did one more outfit description (and everyone seemed to change outfits every scene!), I was going to start swinging from vines and yodeling! So when I got to page 50 of TWILIGHT and Bella and Edward had had their newest outfits described lovingly yet again, I bailed, and haven't been back--the Laurell K. Hamilton flashbacks had begun!

Marilyn, I'm so THRILLED you liked ALANNA! She's a pistol, isn't she? Her adventures take her far and wee, and she's won me a lot of fans. I based her on my younger sister, whose first word was "No!"

And [info]delphinese, not only did we meet, but we spent a lot of a SCBWI conference yakking our heads off! Good times!

I think I like your sister. I definitely like the title of your journal, "Dare To Be Stupid," although in my case I don't dare, it just happens.

I understand exactly about "Little things that make you daffy" I was puzzled by Edward's taste in music. "Music in the fifties was good, Much better than the sixties or seventies, ugh!" He shuddered. "The eighties were bearable."

Really? That derailed me for a moment. He's supposed to be all cool and into classical music but doesn't like the Beatles? Fifties music? Like Elvis? Frankie Avalon? Sha Boom, Sha Boom? I can understand why he wouldn't be into the Beach Boys or the BeeGees but what about the Doors? Steely Dan? Boy George over the Stones? No Bowie? Give me a stake.

(This is where the Boy pats me on the leg, shakes his head and says, "Movie, mom. It's a movie.")

And yep, that was one swell conference. We talked about Spock, stew and clown cars.

I'm off to find a Barnes and Noble. Got to gets me some ALANNA! :-)

Marilyn.

twilight--but only because i read it last night/this early AM and then during naptime---donedonedone! it took me three pre-bedtime reads to get past page 40, but then, i was completely, embarrassingly under edward's thrall with bella at nearly 31 years old. it's ridiculous....i had to run out and immediately get "new moon" making apologies the whole time to the cashier at barnes and noble. now i'm grumpy because e. left and i know it's about to turn werewolfy on me!!!

my universe seems to be speaking "twilight" to me-- on the way home we were behind a car with the following bumper sticker "take heed: i drive like a cullen" or something to that effect...and now this! crazy!

I'm off in some other universe from everyone else because I'm reading Motherless Brooklyn by Jonathan Lethem. It features a PI with Tourette's Syndrome. Even so, it's more tethered to reality than his Gun, with Occasional Music.

I'm reading the Meq. I don't have any idea what it's about, except it seems to be very similiar to the premise of Hancock.

I love the Alanna books, and had a total squee moment seeing that Tamora Pierce commented to this post. She rocks! I hope to move my daughter from the Twilight books to something like the Alanna books real soon.

That said, Twilight is a total guilty pleasure. It was fun, but I think I got a cavity from it.

I didn't read the book Twilight but watched the movie. I felt a guilty pleasure because at the age of 44 I shouldn't enjoy teenage vampire stories, should I? I will be sure to read and/or watch the sequels.
Then there is Avalon. It's silver thread of beauty will surely pull me back there. So much peace and quiet just a few miles from LA. Who'da figured. I tried to snorkel last summer and found I'm snorkeling impared. Couldn't fight the waves and learn to "breathe" under water at the same time. Went back in February and enjoyed the rain and just adult company. Also my sweetheart really finds it relaxing there. And what ever makes him happy makes me happy.
Love the sketches. Next time I will bring my pad.

Oh, you were so off the mark on your Twilight review. Bella isn't whiney to my recollection. And what is wrong with a love story without all of the swearing, nudity, graphic sex scenes etc....????? To me, this is a book for every girl to read. A reminder that there are knights in shiny armor out there...they don't have to settle for the first half-way decent guy that comes along, as so many young women do. For me? In my next life, an Edward Cullen please!

I realized what I really hated about the Twilight series. Bella is a little lieing sneak. All the adults are treated like idiots. Somehow Bella manages to keep her father, a police chief, in the dark about not only her boyfriend being a vampire, but also that her other boyfriend Jacob is a werewolf. Her mother is a helpless lovedstruck fool who sends her daughter away to be with her newest husband. And then doesn't question anything when her daughter suddenly shows up with a bunch of teenagers in tow.
She lies and sneaks around with Edward. Including sneaking him into her bed each night, against her father's direct order. And then she cruelly plays Jacob along. "Oh Jacob, I don't want you to be my boyfriend, but I'm so upset with Edward, could you please hold me and kiss me?"
Sorry but in my book, Bella is not someone I want my daughter to look up to.
*please note I wrote twilight series! Most of her horrid behavior happens after twilight.
